Island (Fortress) in the Sun
History, nature and recreation in a one-of-a-kind destination
31.10.2011

Chances are, you may have already heard of Corregidor Island, that historic speck of land located near the entrance of Manila Bay. It is also very likely that you've read at least one of countless articles posted on the web that describe its significance in World War II, or seen some photos showing its scenic attractions. With this blog, I would like to share some deeper insights into the recreational aspects this unique island.
The Philippines has several better-known travel destinations like the Banaue Rice Terraces, Tubbataha Reef, Mayon Volcano, Hundred Islands, Boracay, Palawan, or Taal Volcano, to name a few; but Corregidor Island provides the adventurous traveler with a different kind of experience. Corregidor is an island far more accessible (from Manila, anyway) than any of the destinations mentioned above. On the average, a one and a half hour trip by way of a fast ferry boat is all that is needed to get there. It's really a single-leg journey, so no connecting flights or long trips via land are needed. All you'll need to take a is a short hop by taxi to go to the ferry boat terminal; and since that's going to be early in the morning, you need not worry about getting caught up in heavy traffic.
People who have visited the island are almost certain to be taken by the innate charm of its terrain and the nostalgic sway of its old structures; more so those who have stayed beyond the time constraints of the regular tour packages. A day tour can give you a broad-strokes historical perspective, while an overnight stay can give you an extra day of exploration; but there's nothing like a three or four-day stay to maximize your immersion.
There's an interesting article about Corregidor Island's charm: http://www.malinta.com/corregidor/adventure.htm
I shall be updating this blog often, so you can visit it from time to time to check for new articles.
